SSC ONLINE CGL DESCRIPTIVE PAPER TOPIC- ENVIRONMENT

All of us love the clean and green environment, but sadly, we don't want to do anything to protect our environment. We pollute our environment and made this earth unfit for life. Many creatures have become extinct and many are on the verge of extinction. The living creatures are so delicately dependent on one another in the nature that the whole ecological balance gets disturbed if even a single terrestrial or aquatic animal disappears from the food web. This is the reason behind the adverse change in the environment due to which all the living creatures are suffering.

As human being scaled the ladder of civilization, life became more comfortable. With scientific advancements, we progressed but it also drifted us away from nature. Uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources proved fatal and now our planet is in the serious problem. Greenhouse gases are increasing the temperature of the earth and the unusual warming of the environment has led to the breaking of tonnes of ice shelves at the poles.

The melting ice increase the sea level and therefore the coastal area are sinking. The uncontrolled felling of trees is increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide acts as a blanket which allows the sunlight to enter the atmosphere but does not allow the heat of the sun to go out of the atmosphere.  Thereby increasing the temperature of the earth the only solution is afforestation we must plant trees and avoid cutting trees. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen thereby maintaining equilibrium between these two gases.

The other environment problem which needs serious attention is the depletion of Ozone layer and a big hole has been found in the Ozone Layer above Antarctica.  In the sunlight ultraviolet rays of representing which are very harmful to skin and cause skin cancer and genetic changes these days, it will stop the Ozone Layer from reaching the atmosphere and its depletion is a matter of concern for everyone.

Another problem demanding immediate attention is deforestation.  The area under forest is reducing at an alarming rate and this means that the natural habitat of the wildlife is also at risk. Due to this many carnivorous and herbivorous have disappeared because they need right sort of place to live and multiply.  In the absence of a natural home, many animals and plants have become extinct. Trees not only prevent soil erosion but also control climate changes. They give us medicine, latex, rubber etc.

It is high time now we did something. All world is in danger. Inter Governmental panel on climate change has said this is in its report, which was prepared by the help of 2500 scientists of the 130 countries. In this report, it is mentioned that by the end of the century the temperature of the earth will increase by 1.5 degree Celsius.  The glacier will melt and extreme climatic changes will take place. The panel gives its report on 6th April 2007 in Brusel. Since its formation in 1988 the panel was working on climatic changes caused by human beings. The report also says that the poorer regions of Asia and Africa will be worst affected.  As per the research, a change of 1.5 degree Celsius to 2.5 degree celsius in the temperature of the earth would result in the extinction of 20 to 30% of plant and animal species. The Other important findings of the reports are that by the end of this century, about 1 million people will face the water crisis, as they are dependent on the water formed by the melting of the glaciers. The increase in temperature is causing the glaciers to melt which will result in the increase of water supplied by 10 to 40% initially, but later after usage and evaporation, the world will face the severe water crisis.

Another matter of concern is that India will be one of the worst affected countries. The Ganges is on the verge of its extinction. By 2013, most of the glaciers of the Himalayas would melt.  The area of the Himalayan Glacier would decrease from 5 lakh/kilometer square to 1 lakh/ kilometer square. It also says that lower coastal areas will be submerged in the sea and by 2050,  twenty crore people will take refuge elsewhere.  However serious doubt being raised on one of the predictions of IPCC that Himalayan blazer will melt by 2030. IPCC has now accepted that this statement is a blunder.
However we need to be cautious now, otherwise, we will not be able to bear the fury of Mother nature which has been exploited by the mankind beyond all tolerable limits.
